The SEArcularMINE sampling campaign continues this season across the Mediterranean Basin.    Project Partners iBET, based in Lisbon, returned to the nearby Samouco Saltworks this week to collect samples for analysis. 

In common with many ancient saltworks across Europe, Samouco is also a protected Natural Reserve.  The salt harvesting had been completed the previous week leaving the 'bittern' – the pink residual waste liquid targeted by the SEArcularMINE project - clear to see. 

These samples were collected send to partners UPC in Barcelona for analysis.  SEArcularMINE in developing innovative processes to recover valuable minerals from these ‘waste’ products.

The second SEArcularMINE General Assembly was held online 2-3 December 2020. 47 partners shared updates on their work and collaborations, with many interesting discussions taking place. 

Communicating the necessity, impact and economic potential of harnessing our seas as a sustainable mineral resource is a crucial part of SEArcularMINE’s objectives. We are proud to work together with project partners, researchers and the wider stakeholder community to help maximise the value and reach of our activities.

SEArcularMINE, a €6 million Research and Innovation project funded under EU Horizon 2020, officially launched its activities, working towards developing leading technologies to ensure the sustainable supply of raw materials for key industrial value chains in Europe

The SEArcularMINE Advisory Board forms a key element of the project’s strategy to ensure that technologies developed are of sufficient benefit to the target end-users to encourage their implementation. Expert representatives of key end-users (Pharma- and Nutraceutical, polymers & materials, energy storage & electronic industries, etc.) provide the project with feedback and input regarding the approach to research and the characteristics of the technology developed. This valuable advice will help SEArcularMINE outputs reach the market faster and ensure that the recovered materials fit the requirements of the target end-users.

SEArcularMINE officially launched its activities at the project kick-off meeting, 24-25 June 2020. Led by the University of Palermo, Sicily, the online meeting included representatives from the 12 project partner organisations from universities, research institutes, SMEs and multinationals from Europe and the wider Mediterranean basin.
